The Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award conducts workshops in University Campuses

WAM Dubai, Sep 26th 2012 26 (WAM) -- Representatives from The Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award recently conducted special informational sessions at the University of Sharjah, College of Fine Arts and the American University of Sharjah; to share and discuss details of the competition as well as encourage the students to participate in the contest.

The road show marked the first of several scheduled university appearances over the course of the following months and was attended by students from the Fine Arts, Communications and Design programs.

Muna Bin Kalli, Executive Director of Dubai Ladies Club commented, "In an effort to inspire and support student interest in the Award, The Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award has partnered with various local universities to host special thinking workshop centred on the Award, the entry process and rules and regulations. Students will also have the informal opportunity to present their art to the Awards committee for constructive feedback and guidance." A delegation from The Sheikha Manal Young Artists Award is scheduled to visit New York University in Abu Dhabi in early October.

First launched in 2006, under the royal patronage of H.H. Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Women Establishment, wife of H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Presidential Affairs, UAE; The Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award is an annual fine arts competition which aims to encourage, recognize and promote emerging artists from the UAE and is especially popular amongst university students majoring in Art, Design and Multimedia.

The contest is open to all UAE residents, male and female, between the ages of 18 to 30 years. One major criterion for the award is that the artist should not have had an independent solo exhibition previously.

Now in its seventh year, the competition has continuously grown with each edition. Last year saw the highest ever number of submissions with more than 200 entries from 11 different nationalities, reflecting the continued interest in art within the community and the role of the Award as the UAE's most important award for young emerging artists.

The competition is divided into three categories they are Fine Art Category which includes Acrylic, Oil, Water Colour, Pastel, Ink, Sculpture, Ceramics, Glass, Print Making, Etching, Mixed Media. Then Photography Category which includes Black '&' White / Coloured Photographs captured by the artist with slight digital modification and printed on flat surfaces including Canvas, Silk, Acrylic Sheets and Multimedia Category - Digital Art, Video Art, Installation.

The application process will be conducted via the competition website www.youngartistaward.ae. Interested participants can follow the instructions on the website to make their online submission before Nov 1st, 2012.

Young Artists Award 2012 entries will be reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges comprised of industry professional and practicing artists from the local and international art community including Khalil Abdulwahid, Visual Arts Manager at Dubai Culture '&' Arts Authority; Ebtisam Abdulaziz, Emirati artist; Ramin Salsali, Art Collector '&' founder of The Salsali Private Museum; Rami Farook, Director '&' Curator of Traffic Gallery; Arsalan Mohammad, Editor of Harper's Bazaar Art.

The panel will shortlist fifty artists for an exhibition followed by the winners being announced during the Gala Awarding Ceremony to be held in December 2012.
