Friends of Cancer Patients charity to take centre stage at CSR Summit
2013-05-16 19:00:03
WAM SHARJAH, May 16th, 2013 (WAM)--Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP), the cancer specific charitable society, is paving the way for charities' - the key recipients of CSR efforts - to be heard at corporate social responsibility forums, as it prepares to participate as official charity at the prestigious 10th CSR Summit.

This will be the first time in the Summit's history that a charity's perspective of CSR will be heard by business leaders from the across the Arab world and beyond.

The 10th CSR Summit - which will take place between the 20th and the 23rd of May - invites business leaders, NGO's, social entrepreneurs, philanthropic foundations and key decision makers every year from across the GCC to give insights on the growing importance of corporate social responsibility in today's world and how to improve on their efforts.

Titled, The evolution of impactful and sustainable corporate social responsibility in the Middle East', this year, the summit will host interactive debates featuring CSR leaders, and provide a 360-degree perspective on CSR initiatives from across the board.

Speaking about their participation at the event, Dr Sawsan Al Madhi, Secretary General for Friends of Cancer Patients charitable society (FoCP), said, "We are very pleased to work with the 10th CSR Summit as the event's first ever official charity representation. Through this platform we want to highlight the four concepts that truly define FoCP and set it apart. The first is Innovation; FoCP has always followed the innovation pathway in its bid to achieve excellence and outstanding results. The Pink Caravan - FoCP's very successful breast cancer campaign - is a case in point.

The ingenuity and uniqueness of the idea has succeeded in creating a phenomenal media buzz which has resulted in cancer awareness in the UAE like never before, in merely a span of 3 years. Another remarkable feat was the development of the paperless documentation system for the collection of patients' statistics and data, used for the first time during the 3rd pan-UAE Pink Caravan ride in 2013. The system comes equipped with survey capabilities." She further said, "Transparency and credibility is another one of FoCP's defining characteristics with its emphasis on developing donor-confidence. FoCP has always had a strict and stringent auditing policy, with Earnest and Young as the charity's auditing firm - a yet another successful CSR partnership between a private sector company and a charity for more than 10 years. The FoCP is the official member of many international organisations and has forged strong networking ties with global cancer platforms like the Union of International Cancer Control (UICC) and Gulf Federation for Cancer Control (GFFCC)." Al Mahdi noted that this gives FoCP credibility, leverage and the unique insight to foresee and implement the latest scientific developments and international best practices in the UAE as well as providing the latest updates on the international cancer agenda to the local community. Finally, FoCP has proved to be a truly patient-focused society, providing care for the entire spectrum of patient needs - from early cancer awareness, to bearing the costs of treatment, to metastatic disease - shining the spotlight on an almost forgotten segment of the community.

"The numerous successes that FoCP has achieved over the past decade became possible because of the visionary leadership of HH Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al-Qasimi wife of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, Founder and royal Patron of the Friends of Cancer Patients charitable society (FoCP)," she added.

Al Mahdi will be taking part in a panel discussion titled Dual Perspectives: Forming Great Mutually Beneficial Partnerships: The Key to Improving CSR Effectiveness' on day one of the summit. The discussion will explore vital questions such as; what makes a great partnership and how can successful partnerships increase the impact of initiatives.

She stressed that one of the most important facets of FoCP's involvement in the summit was to give corporations insight into how their involvement directly impacts on the sustainability of charities as well as the importance and benefit of forging successful partnerships with charities and non-profit initiatives, in order to deliver the best possible results for the final beneficiaries.

The 10th CSR Summit offers unparalleled opportunities for learning and networking with the aim of driving impactful corporate social responsibility in the GCC for the further development of CSR programmes.

The summit will feature a timely and practical agenda driven by experienced experts who will share their best practices and insights into the challenges they have encountered as well as their success stories. The interactive programme has several opportunities for meaningful interaction, with prospects of creating mutually beneficial partnerships.
