University Hospital Sharjah and Institut Gustave Roussy evaluate 2013 results
2013-12-29 13:27:30
WAM SHARJAH, 29th December, 2013 (WAM) -- University Hospital Sharjah, UHS, has announced plans to expand the services of its Breast Cancer Centre as part of the hospital's new strategies for 2014, which are aimed at offering advanced breast cancer treatment and surgical solutions with the support of highly specialised international experts.

The move comes on the back of excellent results achieved by the centre last year.

Patients in the centre received high quality medical care in collaboration with a medical team from Institut Gustave Roussy, IGR, one of the world's leading cancer research institutes and the biggest health centre dedicated to oncology in Europe. UHS will expand the service in response to high demand and in line with the development in healthcare services in Sharjah and the U.A.E..

The announcement was made following a meeting at the UHS headquarters in Sharjah between the hospital's directors and IGR's experts.

In a statement following the meeting, Dr. Amr Abdel Hamid, Advisor to H.H. the Ruler of Sharjah for Higher Education, said, "In implementation of the directives of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, we at UHS have been keen to utilise the available capabilities and exert utmost efforts to maximise the performance of the Breast Cancer Centre to be one of the best in the Middle East. We are happy with the results of 2013, which will inspire us to continue to deliver the best results in cooperation with our esteemed partners in IGR. In addition, these results will serve to open new areas of cooperation in the light of our previous successes and common interests." The French medical experts stressed the importance of the exchange of visits between the institute and university which have helped in sharing experience and best practices, particularly the visit made by the UHS team to France in the last quarter of 2013.

Both sides expressed their satisfaction with the results achieved in treating patients at the UHS Breast Cancer Centre in 2013, and with the outcome of their cooperation in terms of the exchange of expertise and the high quality regular follow up, treatment, and surgery which led to remarkable progress in patient care. 2013 was especially important in terms of allowing for the completion of licenses for the French specialists to practice in the U.A.E., which in turn allowed the utilisation of the French teams' medical, clinical and management experience to ensure optimal services are delivered in the hospital.

The two sides discussed a number of ways of cooperation following the success of the UHS Breast Cancer Centre and based on the hospital's ability to provide all the medical, administrative, technical, and service facilities necessary for success in other healthcare fields. UHS will continue receiving French breast cancer specialists with the first visit of a highly specialised breast cancer treatment team for 2014 already scheduled for next month.
