Austria: Inflation on downward path in January

VIENNA, 1st February, 2024 (WAM) -- Statistics Austria Thursday published its flash estimate of Austrian inflation. The Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) inflation amounted to 4.3%, down 1.4pp from December 2023. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measured inflation also decreased compared to December and stood at 4.5%.

According to the preliminary estimate of Statistics Austria, this decline in inflation is largely due to household energy prices, in particular electricity prices, which were significantly higher a year ago, due to the sharp rise in grid costs.

In addition, prices in many other areas have risen less sharply than in the previous months.
