Leymah Gbowee urges women to be game-changers

DUBAI, 27th November, 2024 (WAM) -- Nobel peace laureate Leymah Gbowee shared her personal experiences to illustrate how women can make a positive difference to the world around them despite heavy odds.

Gbowee, Founder and President of the Gbowee Peace Foundation, shared her impactful journey in fostering peace during the Liberian civil war at a session on the opening day of the Global Women’s Forum Dubai 2024 entitled “Game-Changer”.

Gbowee recounted her pioneering role in mobilising Liberian women to confront the challenges of war, galvanising collective action to demand peace and security.

Reflecting on the negative perceptions and gender imbalances still prevalent in many societies worldwide, Gbowee stressed the importance of women taking the lead in transforming their own realities.

She further elaborated on her approach to inspiring women to counter violence and champion peace, recounting her efforts to lead a movement that culminated in the cessation of hostilities.

Calling on women globally to advocate for gender equality and their rights across all fields, Gbowee delivered an impassioned message, “Do one thing every day that scares you.”
