BEIJING, 4th December, 2024 (WAM) -- A report titled "20 Case Examples for 20 Years: Private Sector's Sustainable Development in China" was released at the United Nations office in China. Twenty Chinese companies, participants in the UN Global Compact, showcased their ongoing commitment to sustainability through a live roadshow.
“In the last decade, China has become the world’s largest investor in renewable energy, with more than $100 billion invested annually, bringing about mutual benefits. Over 800 million people have been lifted out of extreme poverty in China since the 1980s, a feat largely driven by growth and innovation,” Siddharth Chatterjee, UN Resident Coordinator in China remarked.
He added, “This transformative impact offers potential lessons for other nations, especially those in the Global South, seeking to reach sustainable development. As Chinese enterprises expand their global footprint, some also share their expertise, technology, and resources to drive positive change worldwide.”
“Over the past two decades, China has experienced unprecedented economic growth, lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and becoming a major force in the global economy. Chinese companies across a wide range of industries have recognised the importance of integrating sustainability into their core business strategies and have demonstrated that economic success and environmental protection can indeed go hand in hand,” said Jon Garibaldi, Provost, University of Nottingham Ningbo China, knowledge partner with UN Global Compact Liaison Office in China.
Data shows that by July 2024, a total of 1,100 companies in China had joined the UN Global Compact.
