China leads world with over 1.57 million AI patents

BEIJING, 30th April, 2025 (WAM) -- China has submitted more than 1,576,000 artificial intelligence (AI) patent applications as of 9th April, accounting for 38.58 percent of the global total and securing the top global position, according to the latest data.

Xu Shan, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation and Technical Service Department at the CAICT AI Institute, told China Economic Net that “China's accomplishment in artificial intelligence stems from a synergistic interplay of domestic innovation ecosystems and proactive global collaboration.”

China has so far cultivated over 400 national-level specialised "little giant" enterprises in the field of AI. These are innovation-driven small and medium-sized enterprises that own core technologies in niche markets with significant growth potential, representing one-tenth of the global AI industry scale.

The country has established a comprehensive AI industry system encompassing the foundational, framework, model and application layers.

In 2024, the scale of China’s AI industry surpassed 700 billion yuan, with annual growth exceeding 20 percent for several consecutive years. The market is projected to exceed 1 trillion yuan by 2025 and grow to 1.7 trillion yuan by 2035, with a compound annual growth rate of 15.6 percent.
