MOGADISHU, 14th May, 2025 (WAM) -- More than 84,000 people have been affected by flash floods in Somalia over the past month, the United Nations said on Tuesday.
"Since mid-April, flash floods caused by heavy seasonal rains have killed 17 people and affected over 84,000 people in several areas," a report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.
The report noted that humanitarian organisations, often among the first responders, are facing funding shortages that are hindering their ability to meet urgent needs. It also warned of the possibility of further rainfall in southern and central Somalia in the coming days.
The Horn of Africa is one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change, and extreme weather events are becoming increasingly frequent and intense.
Somalia was hit by severe floods in 2023 that left more than 100 people dead and displaced over a million due to heavy rains.
