Fujairah Environment Authority launches project to measure environmental awareness and behaviour

FUJAIRAH, 22nd August, 2026 (WAM) -- The Fujairah Environment Authority (FEA) has launched its pioneering “Measuring Environmental Awareness and Behaviour in the Emirate of Fujairah” project, aimed at developing an integrated scientific framework to monitor and measure levels of environmental awareness and practices, while supporting data- and science-based environmental decision-making.

The project adopts an integrated scientific methodology to assess environmental knowledge and behaviour and analyse the gap between them. This will contribute to building a reliable knowledge and data base to support future planning, enhance the efficiency of environmental awareness programmes and initiatives, and strengthen the community’s role as an active partner in protecting the environment and conserving natural resources.

Field teams have collected random samples representing various segments of society and a range of government and private-sector entities.

The launch of the project is aligned with the objectives of the Fujairah Plan and national priorities in sustainable development. It supports efforts to enhance quality of life and preserve natural resources for future generations, while reinforcing Fujairah’s position as a leading model for using innovative solutions and scientific data to advance environmental work.

Assilah Abdullah Ali Maala, Director of the Fujairah Environment Authority, said the launch of the project reflects the vision of the UAE’s wise leadership and the Emirate of Fujairah to achieve sustainable and balanced development.

She highlighted the importance of moving beyond traditional environmental awareness approaches towards measuring the impact of awareness programmes and initiatives on the daily behaviour and practices of community members.

Al Maalla explained that the project will help identify priorities and monitor gaps in environmental awareness and behaviour, enabling the authority to develop more effective and impactful programmes and initiatives and enhance the efficiency of environmental awareness efforts based on measurable results and indicators.

She called on the teams involved to ensure the project’s inclusiveness and diversify its measurement tools and areas of focus to reach different segments of society, including families, students and educational institutions, government entities, industrial and commercial establishments, as well as farmers and fishermen. She also stressed the need to take into account Fujairah’s geographical, environmental and social diversity.

The project represents a step towards establishing a sustainable system for regularly measuring and monitoring the development of environmental awareness and behaviour across the emirate. It will enable the authority to assess the impact of its environmental policies, programmes and initiatives, enhance the effectiveness of environmental decision-making, and contribute to building a more aware, sustainable and environmentally responsible community.
