ROME, 27th May, 2024 (WAM) -- Italian tennis sensation Jannik Sinner defeated American Christopher Eubanks 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the French Open on Monday.
Italian news agency ANSA reported that Sinner returned to action after a hip injury caused him to pull out of the Masters 1000 event in Madrid and miss the recent Italian Open in Rome.
The 22-year-old Australian Open champion will be sure to overtake tennis great Novak Djokovic at the top of the world rankings if he reaches the final of Roland Garros. "I am not 100 percent but my hip is Ok," Sinner said.
“I am working day after day to recover my best form, with the help of my staff, and I am very happy to be here. I know there are a few details on which I must improve, but I am trying to enjoy myself when I am on the court, which is the most important thing,” he added.
Next up for Italy's new sports darling is Frenchman Richard Gasquet, the 37-year-old world number 124.
