PARIS, 6th June, 2024 (WAM) -- Edouard Roger-Vasselin delighted a home crowd when he won the French Open mixed doubles title on Thursday together with German Laura Siegemund, 10 years after he had triumphed in the men's doubles at the Paris grand slam, DPA reported.
Roger-Vasselin and Siegemund won 6-4, 7-5 against twice Wimbledon champions Desirae Krawczyk of the United States and Neal Skupski of Britain. It was the second title at the majors for Roger-Vasselin who had won the Roland Garros doubles in 2014 with Julien Benneteau.
Siegemund has three grand slam titles now, the others being at the US Open in the 2016 mixed doubles with Mate Pavic and 2020 in the women's doubles with Vera Zvonareva.
Roger-Vasselin named the second title after 10 years "very special" as he thanked Siegemund for accepting to play with him just hours before the registration deadline.
Siegemund said she had initially not planned to play mixed doubles but simply could not turn down the offer. "This was a last-minute thing. I always wanted to play with him, I could not say no this time. This was special, I really enjoyed it," Siegemund said.
