NORDHORN, Germany, 11th June, 2024 (WAM) -- The Netherlands team will travel to Germany for Euro 2024 without midfielder Teun Koopmeiners from Europa League champions Atalanta.
German news agency DPA quoted the national team as saying on Tuesday, “The midfielder won't be able to participate after he injured himself during the warm-up of the match against Iceland yesterday.”
Koopmeiners played a strong season with Atalanta and was a regular player under Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman.
On Monday, the Netherlands had already announced that midfielder Frenkie de Jong was ruled out of tournament due to injury.
Barcelona's de Jong suffered an ankle injury in the derby against Real Madrid in April and had to be carried off the pitch. Since then, the 27-year-old has been in rehab, fighting for a place at the Euros.
In response to the absence of the two players, Koeman called up Borussia Dortmund's Ian Maatsen. He was part of the pre-Euro squad but was dropped from the group. The Netherlands start the Euro 2024 against Poland on Sunday. They also face France and Austria in a strong Group D.
German midfielder falls sick
Meanwhile, German midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic has missed a training session on Tuesday due to an infection, as the team prepares for the Euro 2024 opener against Scotland.
The 20-year-old player from Bayern Munich had already missed Monday's training for the same reason and is said not to have rejoined the squad at all after the players had the weekend off.
The illness comes at the worst possible time for the midfielder who had missed his first call-up in March due to tonsillitis but won his maiden cap last week against Ukraine.
Germany's coach Julian Nagelsmann said he was considering having his tonsils removed in summer. All other 25 players were available.
After a warm-up programme in the fitness tent, the outfield players completed passing combinations, while goalkeeper Manuel Neuer trained with Marc-André ter Stegen and Oliver Baumann on an adjacent pitch.
Two more training sessions are planned in Germany's base camp in Herzogenaurach before the squad travels on Thursday to Munich, where they face Scotland on Friday.
