Japan's industrial output rises 2.8% in May

TOKYO, 28th June, 2024 (WAM) -- Japan's industrial output in May grew 2.8 percent from the previous month, boosted by increased car production, government data showed Friday.

In a statement carried by Kyodo News, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said the seasonally adjusted index of production at factories and mines stood at 103.6 against the 2020 base of 100. It followed a 0.9 percent decline in April.

The ministry retained its basic assessment from the previous month that industrial production "showed weakness while fluctuating indecisively".

Of the 15 industrial sectors covered by the survey, 13 logged higher output while two saw declines.

The index of industrial shipments increased 3.5 percent to 103.5, while that of inventories rose 1.1 percent to 103.5.

Based on a poll of manufacturers, the ministry expects output to decrease 4.8 percent in June but increase 3.6 percent in July.
