7.1 quake hits southwestern Japan, tsunami advisories issued

TOKYO, 8th August, 2024 (WAM) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 hit southwestern Japan on Thursday, with tsunami advisories issued for Kochi, Miyazaki and other prefectures, Japan's weather agency said.

According to Kyodo News, the 4:43 pm quake occurred at a depth of around 30 kilometres off Miyazaki and registered lower 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in the city of Nichinan in the southern part of the prefecture. The magnitude was revised from 6.9.
