ISRO studies impact of space programmes on society: Chairman

NEW DELHI, 20th August, 2024 (WAM) -- The investments in the space programmes have hugely benefited society, by generating millions of employment opportunities that make direct and indirect impacts, Dr S. Somnath, Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), said on Tuesday.

Asian News International (ANI) quoted him as saying that people often do not realise the positive impact of space programmes on society. Dr. Somnath revealed that ISRO had commissioned a study on the impact of such investments on society. He was addressing a programme titled 'Creating a Space Ecosystem: A New Era-Igniting Young Minds for Space Exploration'.

Apart from generating employment opportunities for millions, the space programmes helped create support systems for fisheries, agriculture, crop forecasting, natural resources planning and disaster avoidance, the ISRO chief explained.

"You all understand the impact that it creates when Chandrayaan [India's moon mission] touches the surface of the moon," he added.

Earlier on Friday, the ISRO launched the Earth Observation Satellite (EOS)-08 onboard the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV)-D3 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

The primary objectives of the EOS-08 mission include designing and developing a microsatellite, creating payload instruments compatible with the microsatellite bus, and incorporating new technologies required for future operational satellites, an ISRO release said earlier.
