India, Malaysia elevate ties to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

NEW DELHI, 20th August, 2024 (WAM) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the ties between India and Malaysia will be elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Asian News International (ANI) reported.

In a joint press statement with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at Hyderabad House in Delhi, Modi said, “Our partnership has gained a new momentum and energy. Today we have decided that our partnership will be elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership."

Prime Minister Modi further said that the investment from Malaysia to India reached over US$5 billion last year. Lauding the India-Malaysia relationship, Modi said that the two countries have “more potential” to expand the relations.

He also announced that UPI, India's instant payment system, will be collaborating with Malaysian Paynet, and the linkage of the two will be worked upon. Modi suggested expanding the cooperation in the field of new technology areas such as fintech, semiconductor and AI.

Before issuing the joint press statement, India and Malaysia exchanged MoUs (memorandums of understanding) and Agreements in the presence of both leaders. Earlier today, PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with visiting Malaysian counterpart.

Ibrahim arrived in Delhi today for a state visit, his first visit to India as the Malaysian premier.
