ROME, 23rd August, 2024 (WAM) -- Italian rescuers brought ashore the body of the final missing person who was on a superyacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily in Italy early Monday, the Associated Press reported on Friday.
The woman’s body was detected on Friday, the Coast Guard said. She has not been officially identified, but Hannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of British tech magnate Mike Lynch, is reportedly unaccounted for. The Lynch family was aboard The Bayesian, a 56-metre (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, when went down in a storm.
Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.
The body of Mike Lynch was retrieved on Thursday from the wreck of his family yacht. His wife Angela Bacares was among the 15 survivors.
The bodies of the other four people who vanished when the boat went down were recovered from the yacht on Wednesday.
The superyacht carrying 22 passengers and crew, was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it disappeared beneath the waves in a matter of minutes after a fierce storm struck.
Lynch, 59, was one of the UK's best-known tech entrepreneurs and had invited friends to join him on the yacht to celebrate his recent acquittal in a major U.S. fraud trial.
Besides Lynch and his daughter, the other people who failed to escape from the boat were Judy and Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.
Fifteen people managed to get to safety, while the body of the onboard chef, Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, was found near the wreck hours after the disaster.
