NEW YORK, 15th September, 2024 (WAM) -- Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, United Nations Special Envoy on Financing the 2030 Sustainable Development, has affirmed that the success of the ‘Summit of the Future’, organised by the United Nations at its headquarters in New York on 22-23 September, will largely depend on governments’ commitment to implementing its recommendations and agreements.
In remarks made at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Mohieldin stated that the international organisation will closely monitor the implementation of the summit’s outcomes, which will take place on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly High-level Week.
He described the summit as a platform for solutions, initiatives, and crucial opportunities to salvage the efficiency and effectiveness of the current global system and its institutions dedicated to peace and development. He characterised it as a real chance to reconsider international mechanisms and activate initiatives related to sustainable development and global peace.
He stressed the need for deeper international and regional cooperation to achieve sustainable development, particularly in the Arab region, which is facing significant challenges, including conflicts and humanitarian crises. He noted that the Summit of the Future will aim to propose practical solutions to these challenges through regional and international cooperation.
Dr. Mohieldin revealed that the summit will, among other things, discuss the reform of the global financial system in line with current challenges, highlighting the necessity of reforming international financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
He also pointed out that the summit will focus on issues concerning youth and their aspirations, including their involvement in providing employment opportunities, enhancing their participation in decision-making processes, and adopting innovative solutions for digital transformation, green development, and other emerging issues.
He underscored the important role of youth in the Arab region, noting that they currently constitute the majority of the population.
