PHNOM PENH, 24th November, 2024 (WAM) -- The Global Council for Tolerance and Peace and its international parliament, representing over 100 countries worldwide, launched the "Peace Charter" during the 11th Plenary Session of the International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace (IPTP 11), held today at the Cambodian Parliament headquarters in Phnom Penh.
The session was attended by Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia; Hun Sen, President of the Senate of Cambodia; Khuon Sudary, President of Cambodia’s National Assembly and Chair of the IPTP 1; Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Jarwan, President of the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace; and more than 80 representatives, including heads and members of national and regional parliaments, as well as representatives of international organisations dedicated to promoting tolerance and peace worldwide.
Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Jarwan, in his opening address, expressed gratitude to Cambodia’s leadership and people for hosting this historic session, commending Cambodia’s pivotal role in fostering global values of tolerance and peace.
Al Jarwan extended special thanks to Suos Yara, President of the International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace, for his outstanding efforts in organising the session, which marks the significant global achievement of launching the Peace Charter.
Al Jarwan underscored the urgent need for the charter in light of the major challenges facing the world today, emphasising that the charter promotes dialogue and builds a sustainable future based on peace and cooperation.
He described it as a testament to the ability of parliamentarians and representatives of nations to address global challenges with unity and responsibility.
Highlighting nearly a year of meticulous work with member states of the council to draft the charter, Al Jarwan expressed optimism about its implementation through the formation of an international expert committee, calling for resolving conflicts peacefully through dialogue and negotiations.
Hun Sen, President of the Senate of Cambodia, received Al Jarwan and his delegation, commending their efforts to promote values of tolerance and peace and to launch the Peace Charter during the IPTP 11, stressing the global necessity of such a charter to enhance international peace prospects.
Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, also met with Al Jarwan and the delegation, praising their efforts and those of the participating parliaments in launching the Peace Charter. He reiterated Cambodia’s support for the charter and its implementation worldwide.
On the sidelines of the session, the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace signed memorandums of understanding with several organisations, including the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP), the Parliament of Chad, the Parliament of the Hungarian People’s Republic, the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP), and the Asia National Assembly Water Consultative Board (AAWC), with the aim of enhancing cooperation in areas related to tolerance and peace.
