Global Media Congress explores shifting media consumption trends

ABU DHABI, 27th November, 2024 (WAM) -- Media experts at the Global Media Congress 2024 (GMC) in Abu Dhabi discussed the profound changes in how audiences consume content, emphasising the need for media organisations to rethink their strategies to stay relevant in a rapidly shifting landscape.

In statements to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the first day of the congress, the speakers highlighted that media today is more than just a source of information—it has become a key tool for engagement, influence, and institutional sustainability. However, the rise of "trending" content and diverse audience preferences present challenges in balancing broad appeal with credibility and cultural value.

Sulaiman Al-Hattlan, Founder and CEO of Hattlan Media and the host of the weekly TV talk show "The Arab Talks" on Sky News Arabia, pointed out that audiences vary widely in their motivations, from seeking knowledge to pursuing entertainment. He urged media organisations to prioritise meaningful topics over chasing numbers "views", advocating for a balance between depth and appeal.

Al-Hattlan also cautioned against superficial trends dominating digital platforms, underscoring the need to address societal values and identity to shape positive public discourse.

Nayla Tueni, Chief Executive Officer and editor-in-chief of An-Nahar and Annahar Arabi at Annahar Media Group, stressed the urgency of adapting to technological advancements.

She added that innovation and flexibility are essential for staying competitive, noting that success lies in balancing engaging content with professionalism and credibility.

Mohamed Al Hammadi, editor-in-chief of the Jusoor Post news website, emphasised that audiences are increasingly selective, making quality and relevance critical. He also discussed the impact of artificial intelligence as a transformative force that media organisations must embrace to remain at the forefront of the industry.
