'Ambassadors of Coexistence' initiative promotes global peace

ABU DHABI, 14th May, 2025 (WAM) -- Dr. Etienne Berchtold, Austrian Ambassador to the UAE, said that the "Ambassadors of Coexistence" initiative, launched by the Manara Centre for Coexistence and Dialogue at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, has introduced a series of programmes aimed at fostering peace and cultural understanding.

In statements to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Berchtold said the initiative presents a strong model for combating antisemitism, violent extremism, and hate speech. He emphasised its role in building cross-cultural dialogue and promoting shared human values.

He also described the UAE as a strategic partner for Austria and the West in addressing extremism, citing the country’s efforts as a model worth emulating.

Berchtold recalled a successful interfaith event co-hosted by Austria and the UAE at the Abrahamic Family House in Abu Dhabi last year, which he said laid the groundwork for future collaboration.

Tony Sgro, Founder and CEO of EdVenture Partners, said the second edition of the initiative empowers international university students to create digital campaigns that promote tolerance and mutual respect. He explained that the programme engages students in producing impactful research papers, high-quality video content, and integrated digital campaigns that reflect their vision for more peaceful societies.

Rev. Bishoy Fakhri, Pastor of the Coptic Orthodox Church of St. Anthony in Abu Dhabi, announced a youth-focused project titled "Peace Makers," which aims to instill peacebuilding values in children. The project, he added, is expanding and will be discussed further during the conference.

Isaac Kutsiwa Simon, a student at the American University of Nigeria, said his team is running a campaign called "Ubuntu for Peace," inspired by the African philosophy of shared humanity. The campaign includes peace dialogues, community workshops, tree planting, and initiatives addressing water scarcity as a means to support peace efforts.

Ven. Mudithavihari Thero Balangoda, a representative of the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery in Sri Lanka, said the initiative plays a vital role in spreading the message of peace and coexistence globally. He noted ongoing collaboration with the Manara Centre and revealed plans to host a major event in Sri Lanka to promote these values.
