Zayed National Museum: A historic beacon that celebrates UAE's rich history, honours legacy of founding father

ABU DHABI, 17th May, 2025 (WAM) – The Zayed National Museum – whose opening is eagerly anticipated – embodies the legacy of the late Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. As part of the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), its role extends beyond the preservation of history; it serves as a vibrant institution where future generations can connect with the story of the United Arab Emirates and contribute to writing its next chapters.

The museum also contributes to driving economic development by creating quality employment opportunities and offering specialized educational programs that prepare future generations of professionals for careers in the museum sector.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), stated to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that: “Zayed National Museum is a national knowledge platform that offers visitors the opportunity to explore a wide range of artifacts and items from both ancient and contemporary cultures in the UAE and the region.”

He added: “The museum celebrates the rich history and culture of our nation and honours the legacy of the Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. We continue to draw inspiration from his vision as we move forward into the future – a vision rooted in ambition, education, culture, sustainability, and love for our heritage. These values are at the heart of the Zayed National Museum’s mission and the broader vision of the UAE.”

Tomorrow, the nation celebrates International Museum Day, which falls on May 18 each year. As part of this occasion, the Zayed National Museum offers interactive workshops and school programmes aimed at stimulating and inspiring learners of all ages. Additionally, the museum will be one of the most comprehensive sources of information on the history and culture of the UAE, tracing the story of this land from ancient times to the present day.

Dr. Peter Magee, Director of the Zayed National Museum, told the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that: “International Museum Day offers us an opportunity to reflect on the role museums play in developing inclusive and sustainable communities. Sustainability is not only about the environment – it also includes empowering individuals, preserving culture, and innovating systems that serve everyone better. Museums are dynamic spaces that foster engagement and cultural dialogue, enabling visitors to interact with history and gain new insights into the world around them. In this spirit, significant efforts have been made to ensure that the UAE’s national museum is accessible to all members of society.”

The Zayed National Museum is located at the heart of the Saadiyat Cultural District, one of the world’s most prominent hubs for cultural institutions. The museums and organisations in this district introduce the legacy of the Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and continue his approach by promoting and nurturing cultural dialogue among current and future generations.
