EU-UK leaders to meet in London for first summit since Brexit

BRUSSELS, 18 May (WAM) -- António Costa, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will be meeting with Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, in London for the first EU-UK summit since the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, a process widely referred to as Brexit.

High Representative Kaja Kallas and Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič will also participate.

According to the European Council, the summit will be an opportunity to demonstrate a common stance in working together for peace and security in Europe and to establish a new strategic partnership.

The EU and UK leaders are expected to reaffirm their commitment to tackling strategic and geopolitical issues, and to further enhance cooperation on foreign and security policy. They will also discuss ways to strengthen bilateral engagement across various areas of cooperation.

The United Kingdom is a former EU member state, which left the European Union in January 2020.

Following the UK’s withdrawal, the EU-UK relationship is now governed by agreements that ensure respect for citizens’ rights, fair competition and continued cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
