EU welcomes formation of Syrian justice, missing persons bodies

BRUSSELS, 20th May, 2025 (WAM) -- The European Union has welcomed the formation of the Syrian National Authority for Transitional Justice and the National Authority for Missing Persons.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson for the European External Action Service in Brussels, the EU described the step as an important move toward comprehensive justice and uncovering the truth that the Syrian people deserve.

The statement added that efforts related to transitional justice are essential to laying the foundation for reconciliation and lasting peace in Syria. Investigating the fate of all missing persons is a decisive step towards closing a painful chapter for affected families and communities.

The EU called on Syria’s transitional authorities to ensure that these efforts are implemented with transparency, impartiality and inclusiveness, in line with international standards of justice.

It also stressed the need for full participation by relevant international bodies, as well as Syrian and international civil society organisations, affirming the EU’s continued support for the Syrian people on their path toward peace, stability and justice.
