CAIRO, 20th May, 2025 (WAM) -- The General Secretariat of the Arab League (Social Affairs Sector – Department of Culture and Dialogue of Civilisations) will hold a meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, to follow up on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 related to culture.
The meeting coincides with the celebration of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, observed annually on 21st May.
The event forms part of the Arab League’s commemoration of the day proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2002, following UNESCO’s adoption of the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity in 2001.
The declaration recognises culture as a key pillar for achieving global prosperity, sustainable development and peaceful coexistence.
The meeting will explore mechanisms for advancing several culture-related goals in the SDG framework, foremost among them the promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, the protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage, and the strengthening of international and regional cooperation in the fields of science, technology and knowledge exchange.
Participants will include representatives from Arab member states and relevant international, regional and Arab organisations, in a shared effort to enhance cultural coordination and integrated Arab action in the field of sustainable cultural development.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the Arab League will host a cultural exhibition featuring contributions from several non-Arab countries such as Japan, China, India and a number of African nations. The exhibition will showcase the richness and diversity of cultures through displays including traditional cuisine, jewellery, costumes, visual arts, cultural publications and tangible heritage.
