Economic slowdown drives up unemployment in Austria

VIENNA, 2nd June, 2025 (WAM) -- Austria’s unemployment rate rose by 0.5 percent to reach 6.9 percent in May, according to the latest official data released by Statistics Austria. This reflects an increase of 24,196 people compared to the previous month.

The Austrian Ministry of Labour reported that the total number of unemployed individuals and those enrolled in training and rehabilitation programmes reached 375,347 across the country in May. Of these, 296,140 were unemployed, while 79,207 were participating in ministry-supervised training initiatives.

Commenting on the latest labour market figures, Johannes Kopf, Board Member of the Austrian Public Employment Service, attributed the rise in unemployment to the continued economic downturn. He stated, “As long as we do not see strong economic growth, unemployment will not decline—even if the labour supply continues to grow.”
