SHARJAH, 24th August, 2026 (WAM) -- Sharjah Municipality (SM) issued 180,254 medical fitness certificates during the first half of this year, while its medical fitness centres received close to 240,000 visitors seeking health services across the Emirate, the municipality announced.
The centres, spread across various cities and areas of Sharjah, play a central role in supporting individual health and raising public health standards for the Emirate's residents. They are staffed by experienced medical and technical teams and equipped with the latest tools and technologies to ensure accurate results and fast turnaround on examinations and services.
Dr Amal Al Shamsi, Director of the Public Health Services Department at Sharjah Municipality, said the medical fitness centres offer a varied package of health services delivered to the highest approved standards. She linked the centres' work to the municipality's broader strategy of strengthening the pillars of quality of life and advancing the sustainability of public health across the community.
She added that the results reflect ongoing efforts to improve and develop services, with the municipality keeping pace with the latest technologies and equipment in radiology, laboratory work, electronic linkage and archiving. Continuous upgrades to systems and equipment, alongside adherence to international best practice, have helped guarantee accurate results, speed up transactions and expand the centres' overall capacity.
Dr Al Shamsi said the first half of the year also saw the issuance of 77,251 occupational health cards for workers in food and healthcare establishments. 'Obtaining these cards is a mandatory health requirement,' she explained, 'intended to confirm that staff are medically fit to carry out their duties and to safeguard the safety of services provided to the public.' The municipality continues to monitor the validity of occupational health cards through regular inspection visits carried out by its inspectors at the relevant facilities.
Dr Al Shamsi noted that Sharjah Municipality oversees 17 medical fitness centres distributed across Sharjah city, the Eastern Region and the Central Region, ensuring the geographic coverage needed to meet residents' needs and make health services easier to access through smooth, fast procedures. Examinations at these centres can be completed within 30 minutes, with the medical fitness certificate delivered by text message within four working hours.
Dr Al Shamsi said the medical fitness centres issue certificates for residency, employment, study and work purposes, in addition to issuing occupational health cards and providing hepatitis vaccinations.
She added that the wider range of services also includes urgent examinations, home visits, and field services delivered to companies and factories, among others. These services are provided efficiently to meet customers' needs, enhance their experience, and support the municipality's drive towards more advanced and sustainable health services.
