Glasgow newspaper reports Abu Dhabi archaeological finds Abu Dhabi, Jan. 8, 2004 (WAM)-- The discovery last week of stone houses dating back 7000 years in Abu Dhabi's western island of Marawah was reported by a renowned evening newspaper in Scotland. The Glasgow-based "the Evening Times" said that Scot scientists had helped archaeologists discover the remains of Stone Age houses. "Samples examined at Glasgow University showed the houses date from 6500 to 7000 years ago, which is about 2000 years before the earliest Pharao in Egypt," according to the newspaper. The site also yielded a flint spearhead about three inches long, a flint arrowhead and a grinding stick, the Evening Times quoted Mark Beech, the senior resident archaeologist of the Abu Dhabi Islands Archaeological Survey, as saying. "The houses belong to what is called the Arabian Neolithic Era, which corresponds to the Late Stone Age," it concluded. The houses are the oldest buildings of their type ever discovered in the United Arab Emirates. The discovery was made by a team from the Abu Dhabi Islands Archaeological Survey, ADIAS, working in association with the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency, ERWDA, who are responsible for management of the island's wildlife and environment as part of the Marawah Marine Protected Area, MMPA.
