WAM Fujairah, Mar 23rd, 2009 (WAM): The Fujairah Public Works Department has denied reports of the collapse of a dam in the Sharam region.

Following heavy rain that flooded valleys this morning, rumour had swept through the local community that the dam in the Sharam region had collapsed.

An official source at PWD said that there is no truth to the rumour.

Director General of the Fujairah PWD Salem Musabbah said that the heavy rain Monday morning had caused water stream through the valleys in the Sharam area and the neighborhoods, virtually cutting off the main road that connects the region with other parts of the emirate. This also led to the disruption of traffic for over an hour.

Musabbah added that the sand blockades protecting a number of homes in the village eroded in the rain, causing the rainwater enter those houses. The PWD in association with the civil defence, the Fujairah police and its traffic department intervened in time mobilising all equipments to stop the rainwater enter more homes, he added.
