Ministry of Health Approves New Programs for Blood Transfusion in the UAE
WAM Dubai, 16th March 2010 (WAM) -- Dr. Amin Al Amiri, Executive Director of Medical Practices and Licenses and Chairman of the Blood Transfusion National Committee, assured that the ministry continues to support the blood transfusion services and researches, safety of transferred blood all over the UAE as instructed by His Excellency Dr. Hanif Hassan, Minister of Health.

This was stated during the meeting that was held at the Blood Transfusion Services Center in Sharjah between the directors of blood transfusions centers, blood donation campaigns, mobile blood banks and officials from the Ministry of Health.

Dr. Al Amiri said: "In future time, the Ministry of Health will support the health services in general and blood transfusion services in particular referring that development of blood transfusion services is not limited as it aims for raising the level of performances through a series of research programs that are related to infectious diseases and safety of blood transfusion".

He mentioned that the ministry will hold a workshop about the new modern techniques of blood sterilization in cooperation with Macopharma Company in France. The workshop taking place in the coming weeks will be attended by the directors of blood bank services in the UAE and Middle East.

Dr. Al Amiri emphasized that a third mobile blood transfusion bank will be included in the services of the Ministry during the month of July, in addition to the support of new diagnosis programs through the use of DNA diagnostics that have been applied by the UAE. Being the first Arab country to use this technique, the ministry seeks to focus on expanding the scope of diagnosis and support the role of DNA research labs and employing UAE qualified nationals.

Dr. Al Amiri added that a media campaign for three months will be organized on October to encourage the society members to donate blood in partnership with several media organizations in the UAE as part of the initiatives of the Department of Blood Transfusion Services and Research at the Ministry of Health.

"The higher national committee for blood transfusion will be invited to attend the next meeting in April for the adoption of future plans that support the blood transfusion programs in the UAE in general. In addition, the meeting will also discuss the host of the UAE to an international conference in the field of blood transfusion and research and blood diseases early next year", Dr. Al Amiri concluded.

At the end of the meeting, the members reviewed the statistics and reports of blood transfusion and researches during the past year and the first half of the year for the purpose of assessing the current situation, avoiding obstacles, meeting development challenges, finding the best solutions in the field of blood transfusion services and researches. The annual report of blood transfusion and research center in Sharjah has been recognized as the regional hub for the Middle East whereas its reports will be sent directly to the World Health Organization "WHO" in Geneva, Switzerland.
