DHAKA, 5th April, 2017 (WAM) -- The UAE Parliamentary Division delegation of the Federal National Council, FNC, has participated in the meetings of the 200th session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, IPU, Governing Council at conference centres in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.
During the meeting, the recommendations of the executive committee, last year’s financial results and the IPU’s strategy for 2017-2021 were adopted, and the regulations were amended.
The UAE Parliamentary Division was represented in the meeting by Ali Jassim and Saeed Al Rumaithi, FNC member.
The participants praised the role and efforts of Ali Jassim for his representation in the Executive Committee of the Arab Group, and the role of members of the Finance Sub-Committee and the Gender Partnership Committee.
The IPU Governing Council, chaired by Saber Chowdhury, President of the IPU, discussed relationship with the United Nations and its joint work and co-operation to promote the role of parliamentarians in global issues related to social security, stability and prosperity, and the renewal of the four-year mandate of the IPU Secretary-General.
The names of candidates for the union's committees were approved by the different geopolitical groups, including the approval of the selection of the Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament to represent the Arab Group in the IPU. Parliamentarians also voted for candidates on the Human Rights Committee.
The meeting also reviewed reports from permanent committees and adopted their recommendations. The first permanent committee, the International Peace and Security Committee, discussed the role of the IPU in prevention of foreign intervention in the internal affairs of sovereign countries.
It also discussed recent developments and initiatives in international peace and security.
