Heroes of the UAE' campaign calls on Private Sector to take action on climate change

WAM Abu Dhabi, April 18th, 2010 (WAM) -- Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF), in partnership with the Environment Agency- Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Masdar, has launched the first phase of the "Heroes of the UAE Private Sector" campaign, asking companies to sign up on the campaign's website www.heroesoftheuae.ae and giving them the chance to win an environmental makeover.
Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director of EWS-WWF said "Last year, we launched the Heroes of the UAE campaign, and called on individuals to take action against climate change, through the simple acts of saving energy and water. Now, we invite private sector companies to get involved, and we hope to guide them towards becoming more sustainable and more prosperous businesses. Adopting sustainable policies will soon stop being optional, so we are calling on companies to help the community and themselves by adapting early to changes that are likely to be forced on our current, unsustainable lifestyle." The Heroes of the UAE campaign's Private Sector programme calls on businesses to play their part in tackling climate change by adopting more sustainable business practices.
Majid Al Mansouri, Secretary General of EAD - which launched the Heroes of the UAE campaign with EWS-WWF in January 2009 - said: "EAD and EWS-WWF are working in partnership with companies to help them adopt sustainable practices and be able to adapt to climate change. Through this campaign, businesses have the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership in helping to build a sustainable - and more prosperous - future for all. The challenge of climate change is something we all face, and we all share responsibility in finding the solutions." Companies will have a chance to win a green makeover, generously sponsored by the Emirates Foundation for Philanthropy and Etisalat.
"The green makeover competition meets the Emirates Foundation's mission of promoting awareness of climate change and actions to confront it. We join EWS-WWF in urging companies in the UAE and their employees to reduce energy and water consumption. The energy and water audits and makeovers will help show the winning companies and others in their sector on how they can become even more sustainable." said Peter Cleaves, CEO of Emirates Foundation.
The Heroes of the UAE Private Sector campaign will provide participating companies with a toolkit to help them in getting started. The business toolkit contains general information on sustainable business practices such as carpooling and carbon offsetting, as well as promotional tools and materials that companies can use to raise awareness among their employees. "As the campaign progresses, the business toolkit will grow to accommodate the needs of the different sectors and industries." added Al Mubarak.
