MoHAP launches Robotic Surgeries Programme in Obstetrics & Gynaecology

DUBAI, 9th March, 2019 (WAM) -- The Ministry of Health and Prevention, MoHAP, has launched the Robotic Surgeries Programme in Gynaecology and Obstetrics.

This achievement, which is considered the first-of-its-kind across the UAE, comes within the context of MoHAP’s integrated programme to consolidate the success of robotic surgeries in the country, and also as part of the ministry’s keenness to promote the culture of innovation and fostering the use of Artificial Intelligence, AI, as a scientific approach in health services. MoHAP is planning to provide this service "Robotic Surgeries" regularly and constantly.

Dr. Zaki Al-Muzaki, Head of Chest and Vascular Surgery and Robot Surgery Program at MoHAP, said that the launch comes in the wake of the successful use of the robot in heart surgeries, noting the fast-growing use of robots and AI in modern medicine.

"MoHAP took precedence in bringing the latest robots due to its capability of accessing the most difficult parts in the human body, besides its high accuracy because of the robotic arm firmness during the surgery. Additionally, the use of robots reduces doctors’ stress and also reduces patients’ pain following the surgery. Currently, robots are used in heart, sleeve gastrectomy, and urology surgeries," Dr. Zaki added.

In the same context, Al Qassimi Hospital, Sharjah, hosted Dr. Labib Riachi, Obstetrician-gynaecologist, specialising in robotic surgery, member of the American Board of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, from 17th to 19th February.

Dr. Riachi provided medical consultations for Obstetrics and Gynaecology patients and performed surgeries for chronic cases by using the da Vinci Robot. On the sidelines of the visit, Dr. Riachi gave a lecture on the robot’s role and its effectiveness in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, in addition to its positive outcome with regards to the treatment progress.

Dr. Sultan Ahmed Sharif, Director of the MoHAP’s Visiting Doctors Office, said that the Visiting Doctors Programme aims to promote treatment methods and to keep pace with the latest developments in the global health arena, besides extending cooperation channels and sharing experience among MoHAP’s doctors and the visiting doctors.

He also pointed out that the programme focuses on strengthening the scientific communication with the most prestigious global centres, so as to upgrade healthcare and therapeutic levels, in accordance with the highest-quality international standards, in line with the National Health Strategy and the UAE Vision 2021, which aims to provide world-class medical services.
